Fixing A Furnace That Runs Constantly

Before attempting any furnace repair, take all precautions, and be sure your unit is disconnected from all power sources (not just turned off); and as always, if there is any furnace repair question, please call us here at West Coast Chief Repair—your source for furnace repair in Los Angeles and the surrounding cities.

The Symptom:

Furnace runs near constantly, turning on and off repeatedly.

Possible Cause:

When a furnace or heater kicks on and off continuously, it usually indicates that something is dirty or clogged. The filter is the first thing to check, particularly if you do not replace your heater filter as often as recommended (once per month during the heating season, or more often as needed).

Other problems may cause a furnace or heater to turn on and off frequently, such as a dirty/faulty thermostat, a clogged furnace blower, or a furnace motor/blower that needs lubrication. To diagnose furnace or heater repair problems accurately, or determine if perhaps it is time for a furnace replacement, call a qualified furnace and heater repair service company.

Repair Overview:

First, check and replace your furnace filter.

  • Clean the area (vacuum) around your furnace or heater so you do not add insult to injury and introduce more dust and dirt into the motor or filter housing.
  • Turn of the furnace.
  • Find the furnace or heater service panel.
  • Firmly but gently, open the service panel door—this does not usually require the use of tools.
  • Locate the mesh filter
  • Slide filter out of housing
  • Filter needs replacing if it is covered with brown dirt and dust, or if it is difficult to see through.
  • If your furnace filter is the reusable type, clean it using a garden hose (outside).
  • Disposable filters should be thrown out; purchase a new furnace filter from your furnace parts and repair company (write down the size from the old filter). Arrows on the new furnace filter will indicate how to insert it.
  • Never run the furnace without a filter in place.
  • Turn the furnace back on and see if the problem is corrected; if not, you'll need the help of a furnace repair service for further diagnosis. Most furnace service companies can quickly resolve your heater repair issues; they will arrive with a stock of furnace replacement parts to cover all possible problems.

Call A Furnace Repair Professional

Unless you are a certified furnace repair technician yourself, you are best off consulting a factory trained furnace repair service. Today's HVAC units are complex, and well-trained technicians are best qualified to diagnose and repair furnaces. What's more, you'll enjoy the convenience of on-hand furnace parts for replacement and a parts and labor warranty to cover the repair.
