How To Buy The Right Furnace Or Heater - What's The Best Heater For You?

When it comes time to buy a new furnace, either a new furnace purchase or for furnace replacement, it helps to be informed about furnace buying. Furnace sales are complex, so get informed, then plan on talking to an experienced, knowledgeable furnace sales representative and/or furnace or heater service technician. A furnace or heater is a major expense—you'll want the advice of an expert furnace service company so that you make the right investment.

Maintenance service for a furnace or heater ensures that your unit is running at its best. When furnaces and heaters run well, they run less often, burn less energy, and heat more efficiently. Furnace service also ensures that clean air is passing through your heater unit, making your home or building more dust and allergen-free.

Furnace Sales Checklist

Consider each of the following factors, then consult a knowledgeable furnace sales representative and/or furnace service technician for more help and recommendations.

Consider:

  • Home or building size—discuss square footage heating requirements with your heater sales representative
  • Number of heating zones
  • Your budget
  • Associated utility cost of running different furnaces—including draw on electrical
  • Type of heat/exchange—forced hot sir, hot water, radiant heat
  • Ability to run other systems from furnace or heater like central air conditioning and water heaters, and the added load systems will place on the furnace (durability is key!)
  • Extra features you might like such as humidifiers, energy saving programmable thermostats, air filtration and purification systems, integrated controls,
  • Fuel sources—there are several choices such as gas, oil, electric, wood, and combination units; consider what is most economical for your area
  • Ease of service access and furnace maintenance (both for the furnace service tech and for you to change heater filters)
  • Location and size of installation area
  • Reputation for reliability and long-life
  • Backup heating in the event of utility service interruption
  • Life expectancy and furnace warranty—find out how separate parts like the blower, motor, and fan are covered and if warranties cover parts and labor

Shop good names in furnace sales and furnace replacement, like Carrier, Bryant, Payne, Heil, Trane, American Standard, and Amana.

What The Future May Bring

On average, a new furnace will last for 15 to 17 years, depending on the style, model, and manufacturer. So with good furnace maintenance, you could be relying on your new furnace for the entire time you own your home. Before you buy a new furnace, think about how the needs of your home may change over that time; choose a new furnace or furnace replacement that will last through family and home growth, home renovation, and increase of use.

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is a big deal when buying a new furnace or heater, because HVAC units consume a good deal of energy to run their various components. During heating months, a heater or furnace is the majority energy consumer in your home.

For furnaces, the AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) rating is what matters most; the AFUE tells you in easily comparable numbers how much fuel is converted into space heat. Higher AFUE ratings are better. Ask your furnace service technician or heater sales representative to help you compare AFUE ratings on models you are considering. In addition, shop for energy star furnaces within your budget, and consult the yellow 'EnergyGuide' label for more easy comparison.
